Visiting Lake Atitlan

Visiting Sacred Mayan Sites

We had the good fortune to visit this particular site on the first day of the Mayan new year. The Mayan holy man holding the box was performing a blessing ceremony for a young couple about to get married. Two chickens were sacrificed and the blood sprinkled on the pyre made of candles, herbs and who knows what else.

Rural Life in Quiche

Firewood was the main source of heat for cooking. Every day in Santa Cruz just before lunchtime we could smell wood fires which had been started to cook the noon meal. Since one side of the clinic building was open we could smell this every day in the clinic.

The following few pictures are in a household that makes beautiful fabric that women use for their traditional garments.

Closeup and distant views of two different cemetaries. The colorful structures are crypts.
